Free anti-virus and firewall from Microsoft/Computer Associates:
I just was setting up a computer here at home while I was blogging. Did you know that Computer Associates is giving away a free 12-month license to their anti-virus and firewall program if you visit the Microsoft Protect site? I just used that site to protect this new PC and it was really great. Turned on the firewall automatically, and did some other stuff too. Highly recommended that you visit this site from every computer you own (and email it to your friends, especially the ones that keep getting spyware and viruses).

CERT Recommends Mozilla, Firefox: “EvilStein writes “According to this article, “CERT recommends that Explorer users consider other browsers that are not affected by the attack, such as Mozilla, …”
This is a big recommendation, if you use windows consider other BROWSERS, unless you like having your credit card numbers looked for, being infected with viruses that have no good intentions.

Researchers warn of infectious Web sites: “I’ve switched from Internet Explorer - have you? “Security researchers warned Web surfers on Thursday to be on guard after uncovering evidence that widespread Web server compromises have turned corporate home pages into points of digital infection. The researchers believe that online organized crime groups are breaking into Web servers and surreptitiously inserting code that takes advantage of two flaws in Internet Explorer that Microsoft has not yet fixed. Those flaws allow the Web server to install a program that takes control of the user’s computer.””

Daring Fireball: Broken Windows
Here’s a billion-dollar question: Why are Windows users besieged by security exploits, but Mac users are not?
This reading contends that what is all comes down to is that windows is a bad neighborhood that the people who live there expect there to be a lot of junk so there is. Mac users do not tolerate it. I also find that the comparison of two machines at 6 months old is particularly ringing true.
I have a pc that I only use for testing, by measures of MHz it is 3 times as fast as my mac, and it was ‘faster’ at purchase. Now a year later it is much slower then that same mac… Time to wipe it and start from scratch again…
