WindMaker adds motion to a web site based on the current wind conditions at a place of your choosing. Here’s kottke.org with NYC wind and with Chicago wind. (thx, jim) (link)

Ok I know this is really silly, but it is fun here is my site

Programming is Uniquely Difficult

Programming is Uniquely Difficult:

Engineers of other disciplines often take offense at the claim that software is uniquely difficult. They do have a point. As pointed out by Fred Brooks in hyper-classic The Mythical Man Month, one reason software is hard because software is so uniquely easy.

…snip…

Ironically, it is exactly the unique ease of software development that ends up making it uniquely complicated.

Worth reading the rest, the first in a series I think

Apparently it’s Mac backup day

Apparently it’s Mac backup day:

Both Lifehacker and Macworld write about backup tools for Mac OS X today. Both are worthwhile reads, and both served as a good reminder to me to run a quick incremental backup using SuperDuper.

When was the last time you backed up… Prepared to loose everything since then, I mean everything since then?

When was the last time you tested recovering from your back up… Prepared to loose EVERYTHING, are you. It is not good enough to blindly back up, try to come back from it sometime. I didn’t and it cost me.

Why are the records in swimming being broken at such…:

Why are the records in swimming being broken at such a great pace while those for, say, track and field are more sturdy? More time and money is available for swimming now, meaning that its participants are improving quicker…as opposed to running, which hit its time and money growth spurt awhile ago. (link)

My girls are swimmers and the change in them from good coaching is amazing. They are 7 and 8.5 and really love the sport

A decade of Scripting News

A decade of Scripting News:

On this day, ten years ago, a weblog named Scripting News appeared for the first time at this address. Today, it is the longest continuing running weblog on the Internet.

I have enjoyed scripting news for a long time, I was a subscriber to DaveNet (it even got me to subscribe to wired magazine for a while) and always like the way that Dave got peoples goat. He is a man with a vision, you may not agree with it, or even give him credit for it, but he has it, defends it, and changes it when the times roll on.

Keep on Diggin Dave.
