Tighter [Airline] Security, what does this mean to the Photographer? Second the ‘insurance’ recommendation. I remember watching out the airliner window at one of my expensive video computers (secure and locked in a thermodyne case) getting jammed on the conveyor because of an inattentive operator … seeing the latches and protective tape get sheared through by exposed metal on the aged conveyor, the case slowly open like a reluctant alligator [my fingers clawing at the perspex in impotent agony), the $25,000 item slowly twist out of its bed of cushy foam and slam into the macadam 12 feet below. Upon arrival, the case was taped generously, the parts shoved hastily inside, the foam cut to allow for the extra room the amorphous lump of electronics required. After many angry phone calls, the airline offered $100 bucks.
Note, this is always why you take at least one backup, in a separate case. I liked to hand-carry, too, but that sounds like it is no longer an option. Best I can say: Do the research necessary to find dealers and rental agencies at your destination. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst” was always my credo when travelling with equipment, when performance on-site is a must.
