So we decided to go camping with the girls and Alison’s cousin’s family at Rustler Park in the Chiricahuas mountains and an adventure (or “series of unfortunate events” ensued). It all started the night before… it was raining a little bit (not unusual for this time of year it is monsoon season after all) as we were finishing dinner Abby was clearing the table when she screamed in pain and started hopping about. “I have a splinter, ow ow ow” I carried her to the bathroom to look at in the better light and seeing nothing, but her in obvious pain. Katie yells “mom, dad look a little scorpion”. So we called the pediatrician who told us that she would have a good bit of pain, but that ice would probably relieve that pain, but if she started to have muscle aches and/ or twitching or nausea that we should rush her to the emergency room. Fortunately she did not, she is tougher then you might think looking at the waif. But little did we know what this was warning us… our own ’series of unfortunate events’ … and so the adventure begins.

Pure CSS Menus:

Filed in Simple Tips & How To: The examples of how to use CSS for fly-out, drop-down, etc., etc. menus are getting better and better. These Pure CSS Menus are pretty damn clean in terms of code and use only minimal JS. Very cool.

Cross-Browser Text Drop Shadows:

Filed in Assorted Goodness: From the author of the effect: “This unobtrusive script will throw a drop shadow on any block element with the class highContrast. The result is a hard-edged offset shadow that’s not necessarily pretty, but it gets the job done.”

This is a cool little trick, good to have in the grab bag

Link Thumbnail: Photo Mouse Over:

A little bit JavaScript, a little bit CSS and a little bit clairvoyance, Link Thumbnail shows users that are about to leave your site exactly where they’re going. When that curious mouse pointer hovers over a link pointing to somewhere outside of your site, the script displays a small image of the destination page. It’s a nice visual cue that serves a very real purpose: providing a clearer picture (no pun intended) of what’s ahead.
