Governor Brewer,
I hope that you will reject the budget that was recently pushed though the state senate branch. To make further cuts into an already anemic commitment that this state has made to our children, is not only wrong in the short term but will have long term consequence to the financial welfare of our state. To make our children bear the brunt of this recession will result in a workforce that is further eroded in the skills and talents that companies will look for when making decisions about moving and growing in our state. To create a population that is educationally crippled will do nothing for our states future and growth. We can not expect to attract talented individuals that might start companies here to sacrifice their children future because of slight tax breaks or lower marginal tax rates.
We have a unique opportunity to rise above our short term desires and make some choices that will impact the health and welfare of our state for many year to come. It is not right that a state can take from our youth their future right to be successful in the coming years, to drive talented teachers to other professions or other states. Not to mention creating a state with a workforce that is not able to enter into the workplace of tomorrow (or even today).
I completely support your efforts to make increases to tax rates and taxable purchases to have all of us Arizonans all shoulder the burden of our states future. Arizona has helped lead the country in efforts to have high standards for our kids to give them aspirational goals for what the can (and should) be able to achieve, yet we hamstring the very institutions and people who have to be there to make these dreams a reality. Schools and education are the bedrock upon which the future of our state will be built, do not support efforts to weaken it.
Respectfully yours,
Samuel DeVore
